The maintenance of good health is dependent on the intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. Molewini, KwaNdengezi, Zwelibomvu and Thornwood are historically rural communities where marker gardening was undertaken on a larger scale.
They continue to use food gardens and produce herbs, carrots, beetroots, yams, maize and green beans. In addition to providing fresh produce during club meetings, excess produce is sold within the community. KwaNdengezi has been supplying tomatoes to a Spar Supermarket.
DAFTA has assisted by providing seeds and seedlings, manure, hosepipes, watering cans and hoes. DAFTA requires funding to set up hydroponics (tunnel farming) in these areas to neutralize adverse weather conditions and increase production.
